The musical experiment known as Blktop Project first came about when skateboard magazine Slap organized a tour in the summer of 2002 for Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero and Matt Rodriguez—three of the most accomplished skateboarders ever who also happen to love making music. Their road trip retraced the route of the legendary Blues Highway from Chicago to New Orleans. 

The trio divided their time on the road between skating and recording improvised music sessions. Along the way they stopped at the studio of Doug Scharin, who lent a drumming hand on a few tracks. 



The next incarnation of Blktop Project came in 2005, when Chuck Treece, another legendary skater, joined Barbee, Gurrero and Rodriguez on drums to record a few more songs.



The results of all these improvised collaborations are a self titled album, eight stunning and infectious numbers that owe as much to California’s cool jazz of the 1950s as to San Francisco’s latin soul scene of the early 1970s, with a little bit of Chicago-styled postrock thrown in for good measure. All in all, a real treat.

Lane Change takes over where the EP left off. Funk, soul, latin, afro-beat--you name it, these guys put it together perfectly. The album was recorded in San Francisco by Monte Vallier at Ruminator Audio. Marc Capelle, "the fifth Blktop" (who has collaborated with Grandaddy, John Doe, Mark Eitzel, etc.), played some horns and keys.

Kelly Pratt is Bright Moments. He's the guy up at night by himself, stitching songs together in his New York City apartment all winter. There's a special art to making an album in the spare seconds that the rest of a regular life can't quite reach. Recorded track-by-track-by-track with Pratt on most of the instruments in his apartment studio during the New York City winter of 2010, this slow-motion musicianship became Natives (Luaka Bop).

Bright Moments :: “Tourists” (Shuttle remix)



Natives may be your first official introduction to the music of Bright Moments but if you have spent time with some of the most beloved indie albums of the last decade, you'll quickly realize that you know him well. He is the multi-instrumentalist whose trumpet sparks across so many of Beirut's songs and whose harmonizing vocals is a central component to the band's robust live performances. He has also shouldered everything from flugelhorn to flute to bring Arcade Fire's Neon Bible to life, and was part of the horn section that LCD Soundsystem used during its sunset days.



Although Natives is his first as Bright Moments, it's the spiritual sequel to his earlier band Team B, whose 2008 album was recorded right into the microphone on a MacBook in hotel rooms and hurried backstage demo sessions while Pratt was on tour with Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem. (Members of Beirut, Antibalas and LCD Soundsystem all helped, with LCD drummer Pat Mahoney being the only guy who actually joined Pratt in a real-deal studio.) For Bright Moments, however, Pratt wanted to make sure to take his time.

The album was recorded with no set schedule beyond, and drew slowly together, with the songs all developing at the same time like puppies from a single litter. Beirut's rhythm section (Nick Petree and Paul Collins) and accordionist (Perrin Cloutier), as well as the drummer from Pratt's former Afrobeat band Akoya, awaited direction. On some tracks, Pratt would use his trumpet as a percussion instrument; on another, he'd snip a shaker in half and sample the sound of sand pouring out to make a beat. The lyrics took longest--inspired by and sometimes drawn directly from an old book of Scandinavian poetry discovered on tour, or the little-known story of the girl who was the first person ever to be cured of rabies. (That'd be track two, "Milwaukee," named after the specific method of cure.)

You may not exactly be able to identify the sampled sound of live bats on "Milwaukee," or the bathtub splashing-turned-percussion on "Traveling Light." It's these details-- heard and even unheard, woven into this densely arranged album that allows Natives to reveal itself over time, listen after listen. Natives is soaked in this detail. It's a pop record by a guy who's decided he can do anything he wants. There's no fear on Natives, just enduring, and sometimes heartbreaking, pop songs that unfold forever, with who knows whom hiding within.

Pratt's put this pyramid together, spending a year in the home studio he calls his "instrument graveyard" where a dozen brass instruments compete plaintively for attention with synthesizers, guitars and more. With gigabytes of field recordings and found sounds sourced from all over the planet. And reinforcements, from the ranks of the musicians he's recorded with in the past, this time from Team B, Beirut, Yellow Ostrich and Spoon's Jim Eno behind the mixing board.
Thick with thieves and ghosts the same, Bright Moment's Natives is a long-player created to be lost in.

What is it then? A collection of oriental classics revisited to today’s tastes? It’s all the contrary... Yasmine has an obsession, and it’s that Middle Eastern divas who have always inspired her, whether Asmahan, Leila Murad, Shadia, or Munira Al Mahdiyya, never stopped representing for her a zenith of modernism, femininity, and sensuality. For Yasmine, the dirty, insolent breaking beats of Iraqi Choubi are already electropop, of which the Iraqis would be enthusiastic fans.

Marc Collin is the producer of Yasmine Hamdan’s first solo album due in 2012.  In September 2011 they met in Marc’s studio, Yasmine brought along some songs she’d written, and many favored classics from her huge collection of rare veteran Arab albums. Far from the idea of making remixes, these songs were used as samplers: from this piece, she picked a melody, a chorus, a method of vibrating the Arabic.  From there onwards the lines were repeated, all their arrangements re-worked to yield an original. It won’t be a remake, nor a tribute, nor a modernization, but rather a remote memory of a melody.

Terakaft (meaning "caravan" in Tamasheq) is a genuine desert rock band, sculpted by the pure searing air and the endless rolling sands of the Sahara. The stark, harsh conditions of the desert have permeated their wild riffs, and as a result they are the perfect embodiment of all that is wild and free in desert blues today. Terakaft was formed in 2001 with a line-up that included two former members of Tinariwen, and they have since made the electric guitar their own.

Formed in 2001 by Sanou Ag Ahmed, then based in Kidal, Mali with Kedou Ag Ossad. Kedou was a member of the original line-up of Tinariwen (four of Kedou’s compositions are embodied on their first international release "The Radio Tisdas Sessions").



Terakaft is a perfect mix of two rhythm guitars (one keeping the beat effortlessly, the other soaring and sweet) and the deep tones of the bass, resembling the delicate but strong steps of a camel making its way through the desert. The heavy, pulsating heartbeat of the percussion holds everyone together and completes the sound.

A Parisian-bred singer, pianist, guitarist, writer and producer, she is currently seducing Europe with her brand of soulful melodic pop. Delila was born into a family of musical aficionados; her father, an accomplished piano player, even once had Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye round for dinner. Growing up, Sophie was influenced by a lot of blues, jazz and classical music and early on she fell in love with Stevie Wonder as well as the Beatles. She began playing the piano at age 5 and within a few years was racing home from school to write songs  and record in her father’s home studio.  

So it’s not surprising that at 18 she won a scholarship to the revered Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After a successful time there, she hit the New York City soul scene for a couple of years before moving to London in 2005 to take her career to the next level. Lured by London’s explosive music scene, Delila wrote, gigged and produced and in 2008 Delila landed a record deal with Universal.   

Her highly anticipated debut album, Hooked was co-written and co-produced with Sophie by Steve Booker, the man behind much of Duffy’s multi million selling album Rockferry.  

Whilst working on her first album, Delila became increasingly sought after for artistic collaborations. Throughout 2009 she was one of the lead singers in the critically acclaimed band Nouvelle Vague, featuring on their last album as well as their live European tour (including their Royal Albert Hall performance).  She opened for one of her childhood heroes, Lionel Richie, at the Bercy Stadium last year, and more recently has been seen singing live with Plan B on Radio 1Xtra’s Live Lounge as well as Taratata, which is France’s equivalent of "Later… with Jools Holland".

 The singer is also in demand in the fashion community, with the iconic French label Hermes enlisting Delila to help bring the brand to a younger, more hip generation. A key project tying in with this is a concert on the Liberty Music Stage at the Carnaby Street Festival. This preceeds appearances at UK music festivals including Rockness and supporting Jamiroquai in March 2011.

With the release of her first chart-topping single 'Down on my knees' in 2006, Ayo’s fresh and powerful melody won right away the heart of the public. Born in Germany with Nigerian origins, Joy Olasumibo Ogunmakin was musically reborn in France, gaining instant fame as Ayo. While happily combining mixed legacies, with musical influences such as Bob Marley and Donny Hathaway, Ayo was immediately spotted as a one of a kind artist in the 21st century.

Her debut album Joyful, reached Double-Platinum status in France, Platinum in Germany and Poland, Gold status in Switzerland, Italy and Greece.  Since Ayo has extensively toured Europe &#38; the United States (appearing on the Late show with David Letterman amongst others).







Ayo's third album Billie-Eve, named after her daughter, was recorded in New York with the cooperation of musicians like Craig Ross (guitarist of Lenny Kravitz), Saul Williams, Matthieu Chedid and Gail Ann Dorsey, bass player of David Bowie.

This new album conveys the earnest dancing grace of a musician whose main credo is constant evolution. Ayo explains, ‘This third album is more straight to the point, drier in a way, more simple. It has this rock feeling to it because of the electric guitars. As opposed to my previous two albums, I played very little acoustic guitar on this one. 

The album delivers varied musical styles, ranging from reggae to psychedelic rock through blues and the deepest kind of soul, all supported by the most powerful and intense lyrics she has ever written.

Edinburgh-based Hidden Orchestra combine two live drummers, organic samples and dubby basslines to make cinematic, emotive, percussive music. Their sound, resplendent with layers of intense soundscapes, takes audiences on a deep and truly original sonic journey containing elements of jazz, classical, drum’n’bass, rock and hip hop, moulded into a coherent whole.

Debut album “Night Walks”, released on Tru Thoughts in September 2010, has been met with critical acclaim (including BBC Radio 1 Introducing’s “Album of the Month” and iDJ’s top albums of 2010; radio play from BBC R3′s Late Junction, Laurent Garnier, FIP, RTS, NME, Radio 1 Prague and many more worldwide) and sparked a genuine and organic buzz among music fans, with a huge demand to experience the music in a live setting. A deluxe vinyl edition of the album was released in January 2011 on cult German label Denovali Records, and is now already on its second pressing.





The album was part-funded by the Scottish Arts Council, and features a selection of distinguished Scottish jazz/folk/classical guest musicians. An intense and rewarding listening experience, the album encompasses the energy and production techniques of studio-produced beats, but replacing synths and drum machines with natural/acoustic sounds and instruments for an emotionally potent style. Built on contrasts – experimental without losing accessibility, electronic and acoustic, complex and simple, dark and energetic whilst intricate and calm – there is a sense of journey and progression, and, in bandleader Joe Acheson’s words, “the brooding reflections of a solitary walk through the still, restless night”.

Hidden Orchestra have a very eclectic fanbase, which could be born from the fact that the emphasis is on being experimental and accessible at the same time, creating music based on feeling and energy, rather than image or fashion. Impossible to pigeonhole, the band have previously won the guitar/indie/ rock band-dominated T-Break competition to play at T in the Park, while simultaneously being listed by Radio Scotland in the A-Z of the greatest Scottish jazz artists of all time. In addition to their own headline gigs, Hidden Orchestra have supported acts including Aim, Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, Jaga Jazzist, Craig Armstrong, The Bays (…and, ahem, Coolio). Their beautifully-crafted, explosive live show, where the core quartet is augmented with visuals, cello and brass, has cemented their reputation as one the UK’s most unique and watchable up-coming outfits.

A tall Icelandic man, has been playing under the name Bang Gang since 1996, and only started using his real name eight years ago. First came the very atmospheric "You" (2000), with surprisingly soft, vaporous outlines for someone with such a violent stage name.  2003 confirmed Bardi’s talent as a composer, performer and producer.





Two simultaneous albums made him a major figure of musical melancholy: "Something Wrong", Bang Gang’s second album, where the softness of the acoustic songs meets adventurous electronic explorations; and Lady &#38; Bird, a side-project for an androgynous duo with the talented artist Keren Ann. Hot on the success of these two creations, but never over-confident, Bardi toured Europe, Japan and the USA before vanishing back to his anonymous activities, away from the limelight. 





Backing up these albums with the hugely successful Ghosts of the past which has seen him touring Europe through to China, Bardi is back in the studio recording a new Bang Gang album for 2011.

If you could soundtrack the brooding ocean and the jazz of the surf, the Mattson 2 would most certainly be the composers. The foot stomps of a shoe-gazed salty air meets the tight groove and polished shake of the night with each of the duo’s multi-layered tracks. 

And with the recent release of their third album on Galaxia, Feeling Hands, audiences around the globe are witnessing the growth of two musicians hitting full stride with deft layering, detailed composition and an altogether unmistakable sound. 







With their signature suits in tow, both Jared and Jonathan have relentlessly toured venues throughout South America, Europe, Japan and Scandinavia, generating global acclaim while also further curating their sound into a musical kaleidoscope that brings to mind everyone from Charles Mingus and Chet Baker to the Smiths and the Jesus and Mary Chain. 

Having recently acquired a pair of Bachelor’s degrees in music from the University of California San Diego, the Mattson’s have buried the improvised ways of so many jazz predecessors to focus on the orchestral composition of each piece, utilizing the studio as an instrument itself (along with a double-neck guitar and some precision looping for good measure). 

Having performed and recorded with the likes of Ray Barbee and Tommy Guerrero, the Mattson 2 have grown up quick, accomplishing more in a short time than many musicians in their entire career, and thus further providing a mature sound that is equally at home on the beach as it is in the smokey jazz clubs.
